Structure & Content Research by Department

Core Courses

Core courses include three areas of study: research methods, education methods and health sciences. The research methods core courses expose students to a broad overview of the designs and methods (qualitative and quantitative) that they are likely to use when investigating rehabilitation science. The education methods courses proved students with content and mentoring opportunities that prepare them to comfortably assume the role of an academic instructor. The health sciences courses are focused on a student's areas of interest within their specific discipline.

Research Methods

Modern Scientific Inquiry
The development, philosophy, and methods of the natural sciences are examined in order to illustrate the process of scientific discovery, the logic behind the scientific method, and the progress of the sciences from antiquity to modern times.

Quantitative Research Methods
A strong foundation for critical analysis of the health sciences literature and statistical analysis of quantitative clinical research studies are developed.

Qualitative Research Methods
Knowledge and skills of qualitative research are developed. Qualitative research designs and methods of data analysis are covered in detail.

Required Research Elective
Students are required to complete a second research course and/or research apprenticeship in the research designs and methods that will give them additional content expertise and provide the foundation for their thesis/dissertation research.

Education

Educational Methods
Students are provided with information and skills in curriculum design and instruction that will allow them to be effective and innovative teachers in both the classroom and laboratory.

Teaching Practicum 1
Students participate in supervised teaching activities in an existing course. A variety of educational tasks and responsibilities are introduced as the student participates in the design, implementation and evaluation of educational activities. Emphasis is on implementing teaching methods and strategies that were introduced in Educational Methods course.

Teaching Practicum 2
Teaching Practicum 2 moves the student into a wider, more sophisticated range of tasks and responsibilities. Students are expected to assume a significant amount of responsibility for a new or existing course. Emphasis is on course development and or revision, methods of instruction, and assessment. Different teaching strategies, teaching experiences, and selected readings, are discussed with a faculty mentor/supervisor who oversees the course and student's work. Specific aspects of designing and evaluating a course, teaching methods, evaluating students' performance, and one's own teaching performance will be covered.

Health Sciences Concentration

Overview of Health Sciences Research
This interdisciplinary seminar course provides students with an overview and introduction to the various and diverse research activities and interests of Rangos School of Health Sciences faculty members. Students learn about research in the three major focus areas of RSHS, including Applied Clinical Research, Basic Science/Laboratory Research, and Research in Education and Educational Methods. Weekly guest lectures highlight and showcase on-going research. In addition, this course promotes students' active participation and thinking about their own research ideas and potential projects for their own graduate research.

Evidence-Based Practice
An advanced discipline-specific course that investigates the evidence supporting current clinical theory and practice, and explores current issues in Evidence Based Practice in the health professions.

Required Electives
PhD students complete 12 credits (MS students 6) of required elective courses. The required elective courses provide the student with in-depth content specific to the student's area of interest. These courses prepare the student to be a content-expert in and area relevant to their specific dicipline.
