In order to prepare its graduates for a career in today's healthcare environment,
the Rangos School of Health Sciences' Department
of Health Management Systems has created a new
degree track that trains aspiring physicians
with a strong foundation in science as well
as with the necessary skills in technology and
business. Through a partnership between the
Department of Health Management Systems and
the Pre-Health Professions Program, students
will gain this critical combination of skills
at the undergraduate level. While some medical
schools offer courses in these areas, there
are very few pre-med programs in the country
which offer this training at the undergraduate
level and with a four-, not five-year program.
Therefore, the graduates of this program will
have a substantial advantage in the market place
and can enhance their credentials in preparation
for the medical school admissions process. This
program combines standard pre-med courses such
as chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology
with key courses in business and information
technology, such as healthcare finance, managed
care, information science, database management,
and health law. Pre-medical students will thus
learn not only the clinical components, but
also the business of healthcare. This will prove
to be very valuable as physicians today not
only practice clinical medicine, but also work
in managed care organizations, public health,
and university medical centers. While some of
today's physicians find themselves later returning
to school for an MBA in order to master these
concepts, this new degree track provides this
critical training along the way to a bachelor's
degree. This new program reflects the school's
effort to provide its students with an up-to-date
curriculum that meets the demands of the dynamic
world of healthcare.
