Professional Narrative:
Patricia Crist, PhD, OTR, FAOTA, is Founding Chair and Professor of the Department of Occupational Therapy in the John. G. Rangos, Sr., School of Health Sciences at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania which opened in 1992. She currently is Program Coordinator for the interdisciplinary PhD program in Rehabilitation Sciences. Dr. Crist is a Fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association.

Dr. Crist has been awarded a Bachelor's of Science (entry-level professional degree) and Master's of Science (post-professional) in Occupational Therapy from Colorado State University . She earned a Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. She has continuously maintained her certification as a registered occupational therapist through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy. Patricia is currently licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania .

Her occupational therapy work history began in community and hospital-based mental health, children's mental health residential care and a private school for children with special needs. Prior to Duquesne, Dr. Crist was an associate professor and fieldwork coordinator at Colorado State University, a land-grant institution, before chairing and being a professor in the program at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center professor, a state-supported, medical school environment.

Dr. Crist has a prolific background regarding the study and dissemination of research and training information in occupational therapy education & practice. Dr. Crist has completed more than 60 invited and refereed keynotes, workshops, presentations, posters and roundtables throughout the United States on diverse topics in fieldwork education, occupational therapy in mental health, parents with disabilities and research. She is most recognized for championing OT educators saying, “Our practice is education,” since her days as Chair of the AOTA EDSIS. Since 1988, she has written a column about fieldwork issues for OT Advance newspaper based on her experience as a fieldwork educator and academic fieldwork coordinator for over 25 years. She is an invited consultant on curriculum development and fieldwork education.

Her servant leadership experience is extensive. She has served within the American Occupational Therapy Association on the Commission on Education and as Chair of the Education Special Interest Section. She served two terms on the board for the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy. At NBCOT, she was President for two years, chaired the 2002 Practice Analysis study for OTR and COTA (a validity study for the certification examination blueprint) and chaired the Research Advisory Committee. In this role, she was a co-founder of the Occupational Therapy Organizational Partners (OTOP) in 2004 to create a working group between the presidents and their executive directors from NBCOT, AOTA and AOTF to enhance the future of the occupational therapy profession through mutually-beneficial activities.

Currently, her community service includes serving on the board of directors for Vincentian Collaborative Rehabilitation Services, the Center for Creative Play and Zonta International, Three Rivers Pittsburgh North chapter. She is a merit badge counselor for the Boy Scouts of America.

She is a life member of Pi Theta Epsilon, the OT honorary, Phi Kappa Phi (elected as a faculty member at Duquesne), and Mortar Board. She is President of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society chapter at Duquesne. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and was awarded the Jerome Hafter Fellowship for graduate studies.

Patricia has 2 children, Ryan (24) & Kalli (21) and currently lives in Wexford, PA, outside Pittsburgh. She was born in Temple, Texas and reared in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She enjoys family life, her dog Snowball, gardening, camping, craftwork & entertaining.
